Mercedes teases new AMG EV sedan

Despite softening demand for electric vehicles, manufacturers continue to place big bets on their long-term promise. As a result, new EVs continue to be revealed at a steady pace.

One that recently caught our eye is a new Mercedes-AMG EV sedan that is slated to be revealed in full next month, according to a report from Car and Driver.

The car, which Car and Driver suggests will replace the current gas-powered AMG GT sedan, appears to be a four-door sedan with a liftback-style hatch rather than a conventional trunk. The current AMG GT sedan is also a liftback.

Mercedes-AMG posted a photo set on its official Facebook account, with the following caption:

“The focused gaze of a true athlete. SO EYE-CATCHING. SO AMG.”

Read into that what you will, as there’s not much to be gleaned given the car is in shadow and it’s wearing camouflage. The details that stand out, however, are three-pointed stars in the headlights and taillights. Camouflage obscures other design details, apart from a sedan greenhouse, and flush front and rear door handles which are clearly visible.

As for chassis and powertrain, Car and Driver says the car will ride on its own platform called AMG.EA. The magazine also reports that it will have a high-voltage battery and electric motors that are being developed by a British company called Yasa. Mercedes-Benz bought Yasa in 2021. The report states an SUV based on the same AMG.EA architecture is also in development.

Of note, the current AMG GT sedan dates to the 2019 model year. It’s currently sold in four variants in the U.S., including six-cylinder turbo (GT 43), six-cylinder turbo hybrid (GT 53), turbo V8 (GT 63), and turbo V8 with plug-in hybrid (GT 63 S E Performance). The latter is the newest addition to the lineup, having just arrived last year.

After the new car is revealed next month, we should know better if Mercedes is planning for production overlap between EV and gas-powered models. The Car and Driver report says there could be a transitional period where production for gas models is extended. The Mercedes-AMG EV sedan is expected to go on sale as a 2026 model.
